An ear ache is one of the most painful conditions most people will ever experience, even in one of its mildest forms. Along with hearing, your balance is the other major function performed by your ears and an ear ache can disrupt not only your hearing but also make walking or even sitting up difficult.
There are three main parts to the ear. The outer ear (otitis externa), the middle ear (otitis media) and the inner ear. Both the outer and middle ear will have different symptoms. When the ear infection is located in the outer ear it is usually a case of mildly itching and light pain. Swelling and a thick discharge may also accompany an infection. This is the part of the ear usually affected by “Swimmers Ear”.
Otitis media is a stronger pain usually and there may be some muffling to the hearing and occasionally there will be a discharge from the ear. Young children most frequently get this type of ear ache the most and it will usually be accompanied by a fever
A young child or anyone with a suspected middle ear infection should be seen by a medical professional however if you have a case of an outer ear infection, most of these can be treated using items you probably already have in your home.
The humble garlic clove has wonderful antibiotic qualities that will also help alleviate the pain you may be feeling. A few drops of garlic juice dropped in the affected ear will bring fast relief. Another remedy that is tried and true is to put a few drops hydrogen peroxide or juice from holy basil leaves in the ears.
To avoid swimmer’s ear in the future, use ear plugs when swimming and clean ears thoroughly after swimming or diving and you should greatly lessen your chances of developing this painful condition.
