Nail fungus is common and equally uncommonly hard to get rid of. Toenail fungus is also known as onychomycosis and is caused by the group of fungi named “dermatophytes”. These are harmful fungal infections to have because they actually feed on the keratin that makes up the surfaces of your toenails. Toe nail fungus is easy to spot as it causes unsightly disfigurement of the nail as well as a noticeable discoloration of the nails. Like most fungal infections, this is also very contagious.
If you have contracted nail fungus, it will be obvious due to the changes in the nail and these tend to occur rapidly rather than gradually. The nail or nails that are affected will turn yellow to brownish in color and there is usually a thickening of the nail itself as the fungus builds up. In strong fungal infections there may be an unpleasant smell and the nails may become so brittle that they crumble off the nail bed on the toe.
You can pick up a toe fungus almost anywhere but mostly be aware and protect your feet in wet areas such as public changing areas in gyms, shower stalls, swimming pools and other public facilities where people might go barefoot. Fortunately there are some good home remedies that can make your toe fungus a thing of the past.
Tea tree oil, a long known natural antiseptic is fabulous as killing the fungus on nails. Apply full strength to affected areas and rub it in. You may want to use this method two to three times a day to rid yourself of the fungus and then use as a maintenance once daily with a mixture of a 1 part tea tree oil and 1 part olive oil; use whenever you’ve exposed your feet to public areas where there is also water.
Soaking your toes in a mixture of 3 parts apple cider vinegar and one part warm water also has given relief to many people. Completely dry your feet and make sure no water is left around the toes or under the nails. Repeat nightly for one week and you should see your toe fungus end. You can further hasten the process by dabbing your nails with tea tree oil or lavender oil and making sure your nails are completely dry before putting covering your feet in any way.
Use these tips and eradicate your toenail fungus and make it a problem that you used to have!
