You may be wondering if your decision to give up meat is the right one. So how will it change things in your life and for the planet? While it might be true that one extra person won’t make a huge statistical difference in a world of meat-eaters, you can do a lot as an individual that will be good for you and good for hundreds of animals. A diet made up largely of meat causes heart problems which are the most common causes of death in the United States and other meat consuming countries.
Many of today’s heart conditions would not be so commonplace if people did not eat so much food with high levels of cholesterol, such as dairy products and eggs. In fact the group Earth Save states that
a vegetarian has around 25 percent less chance of a heart attack than someone who consumes meat as part of their diet. Those individuals that have gone one step further and have become vegans have around a ten percent chance of a heart attack as opposed to people on regular diets. But these are not the only health benefits of choosing to be a vegetarian.
For instance, you won’t be exposed to nearly as many preservatives, which are common in meat and are linked to cancer. Animal feed also contains hormones to make them put weight on faster so vegetarians are not usually exposed to these chemicals which most people consume everyday. It is also much easier to avoid the consumption of lactose which many people have intolerance to, causing digestive conditions. In addition to health benefits you will receive as an individual by becoming a vegetarian, you will also reduce your share of the suffering human beings inflict on animals.
According to veganoutreach.org, the average American consumes 2,714 land animals in their lifetime. It is a sobering thought that a change in diet could literally save hundreds of animals from being slaughtered over the course of a decade alone. Furthermore, by reducing your intake of dairy products and eggs, many hens and cows will have better living conditions. Well after reading this it is obvious the easy answer is yes it is better to become a vegetarian. An improvement in your overall health with less chance of cancer or a heart condition and the reduction of animal deaths provide a compelling argument.
