Diaper rash is a condition that most parents face at one time or another during their child’s first two years of life. Some children seem more prone to it than others and fortunately, there are a number of things you can do to alleviate the discomfort of the your child.

Diaper rash is simply an inflammation of the skin and primarily affects the thighs and buttocks, areas the diaper has been covering. There may be small red bumps, large red bumps or a mixture of the two types. It is red, inflamed and itchy.

A young baby that cries inconsolably and is repeatedly grabbing at their buttocks and thigh area is probably trying to tell you she has diaper rash. Older children may say they hurt or itch around their diaper area. When you take a look, it’s very easy to diagnose, as the bright red rash makes itself clearly known. Now that you know your baby has diaper rash, instead of putting unknown chemicals on your child, use some tried and true home remedies.

First of all, the rash is caused by friction of the diaper combined with the exposure of the sensitive skin to irritants in urine and feces. Keep your baby dry and changer him often this goes for diapers that he has soiled as well as diapers that he’s gotten too hot and sweated in. Both scenarios are irritants to baby’s sensitive skin. Avoid the use of powders as they can be inhaled and studies have shown them to be harmful to the lungs of babies.

Coconut oil has proven very effective for making a buffer between the diaper and the irritants and will give the skin a chance to heal while still being able to cover your baby. Other oils that have helped babies are the application of shark liver oil and cod liver oil to the infected area.
